Spock and T'Pring get up to hijinks with Captain Pike and Nurse Chapel as Ken and Sabriel review the first half of Star Trek: Strange New World 's debut season. Who are our favorite characters, what episodes have we liked best, and how does the show compare with Discovery and Picard ? Bonuses include praise for Rebecca Romijn , a review of Star Trek: The Motion Picture , comparisons to a cinematic technique employed by Avengers: Endgame and Nobody , and a brief conversation with a Stargate SG1...

After a mediocre middle act, Picard 's penultimate season comes to a satisfying, bittersweet conclusion. Some important lessons were learned at great cost, some familiar faces made a return, and some intriguing questions were raised. With most loose ends tied up, Ken and Bri are left wondering: was this season meant to be binged? As Steve Jobs once said, you can't connect the dots looking forward, only backward.

Ken and Bri are shocked by the secrets in Picard's childhood, but we're relieved to see Picard, Seven, and the Queen ready to face their fears. There's still one episode left in the season, though — where do we go from here? This podcast episode comes with a content warning for discussion of self-harm as depicted in Picard .

This episode is ostensibly about Picard, but Chief Engineer Ken and Commodore Mark Thompson felt Teresa and Tallinn stole the show. Forget stepping on a butterfly, though — this show is trampling an entire field of them. Has Voyager 's Lt. Ducane arrived to clean up the mess? And where are Q and Adam Soong? There's a lot of ground still left to cover, and not much time left in the season!

Our goodness, can Agnes Jurati sing! Her showstopper number crescendos in a terrifying union with the Borg Queen, the two actors playing off each other perfectly. Other subplots leave us a bit uncertain: is Picard grandfatherly or manipulative? Is Adam Soong ostracized or influential? Is Tallinn a Romulan or not? All this, plus our excitement for  Picard  season 3  as well as  Strange New Worlds ! Reddit threads mentioned in this episode: Members of Soong Dynasty qualitatively ranked in...

Agnes and the Borg Queen get closer; Chris, Raffi, and Seven finally decide to join the plot; and Q continues to behave in unexpected ways. Although Ken and Sabriel enjoyed the episode's humor and Easter eggs, we're left wanting cliffhangers with significant payoffs and adding more depth to existing  Star Trek  lore.

Although Ken and Bri agree on loving both the new Guinan and the return of Punk Rocker, we're divided on this episode overall. Why are they ignoring "Time's Arrow"? And how are Chris, Seven, and Raffi moving the plot forward? We discuss how woke  Star Trek  is in its critique of modern society's maladies, we compare Q to a villain from  Buffy , and we turn our eyes skyward to Europa for the future of the season.

Stage magician  Kayla Drescher  joins Ken and Bri all the way from the  Chicago Magic Lounge ! Picard and crew have crash-landed on 21st-century Earth. Our highlights were watching Dr. Agnes Jurati spar with the Borg Queen, a budding romance between Cristóbal and Teresa, and an unassimilated Seven of Nine being comfortable in her own skin. We also have five theories as to who the Watcher may be!

If you liked the Amy Adams movie  Arrival , you'll love this episode of  Discovery ! Bri and Ken enjoy get to see the science and linguistics behind first contact with a  level II civilization , accentuated by some fancy camerawork directed by Olatunde Osunsanmi. The decisions of certain characters within and without the Federation continue to disappoint us, though, as does some sluggish detective work by our resident engineers.

To boldly make connections where no one has connected before!  Discovery  may be departing the Milky Way, but this episode is about relations: Kelpian to Vulcan, captain to president, scientist to scientist, father to child. Ken and Sabriel like what we're seeing — but will it give the crew the strength they need to face species 10C? And, as an aside,  what if  Man of Steel  had been in color ?

We start to like Ruon Tarka a bit more, and we love seeing Nhan back in action. We know the measure of a man; this week Ken and Bri learn the measure of a Zora. Was Stamets the right person to lead this charge against artificial intelligence? And is there anything Kovich can’t do? We also celebrate the return of Star Trek to its roots, with lots of talking and diplomacy over action! We’re suspicious of Tarka and disappointed in Book, but we suspect things will resolve in rapid sequence when Discovery returns from its mid-season break on February 10, 2022.

An insecure artificial intelligence and a crew that doesn’t know how to use space probes or transporters are the source of this episode’s fatalities. But Ken and Bri are excited to see Zora join the crew and be respected as such. We also remember a lesson from The Princess Bride about living with anger, and we ship two favorite characters we see reunited this week.

Hey, you know what’s a great idea? Performing a destructive scientific experiment right next to the spore drive during an evacuation! 🤦🏼‍♂️ Bri and Ken find much of the tension in Ruon Tarka’s visit to Discovery to be incredibly contrived, and we have to dig to determine how a prison break develops our heroes. We are however intrigued by how two “struggling” crewmen are each handling the unreasonable expectations they’ve set themselves to save everyone.

The season’s third episode gets three subplots, and Bri and Ken are here to review them all! We’re disappointed with the illogic of a rogue Qowat Milat, though we’re always up for a good sword fight. We love Paul Stamets’ empathetic side, and we’re eager to see what comes next for Gray and Adira — as fraught as it may be, if history is any lesson. "Kobayashi Maru" is an explosive start to  Discovery 's fourth season, raising questions for which Bri and Ken have no answers but plenty of theories. Discovery and Michael, reunited, return to Earth, only to receive a frosty reception. In this special Halloween episode, Sabriel and Ken are fans of the show's character development, we wonder about Michael Burnham's and Cleveland Booker's relationship, we contemplate how we'd feel to know our loved ones had been gone for centuries — and we want to see more Earth, please!

Ken & Bri are joined by First Officer Tiffany Bridge to review the second episode of Discovery 's third season. From the Old West tropes and Georgiou being a force to be reckoned with to Stamets' and Reno's witty repartee and tie-ins to the Short Treks episode " Calypso ", we are here with theories and enthusiasm.

Star Trek: Lower Decks has debuted, and Transporter Lock returns to the air to review this new animated series! This half-hour comedy is faithful to Star Trek lore, but Ken and Bri find its humor falls flat. Lt. Commander Joe Strosnider of Joe's Computer Museum joins the podcast crew as a special guest, lending his engineering insights into the premiere episode as we debate our favorite characters, most believable moments, unique applications of the holodeck, similarity to The Orville and A.C....

Susan Arendt of the Continue Podcast returns to the show to join Ken and Bri in reviewing the first season of Picard . We loved some of the new characters and were meh about others. Familiar faces were welcome, though is there such a thing as too much Seven of Nine? And was the season finale poetic, or cowardly? Tune in to find out!

Ken & Bri jump right to the heartwrenching end of Picard's first season finale, as familiar characters say their goodbyes — we didn't want the game to end! Some of our predictions from part one were correct, but most were not, leaving us utterly unprepared for these gut punches. We remain hopeful of seeing more of Seven of Nine in her own rumored spinoff . For now, we bid adieu to mon capitan as we've known him.

Ambassador Josh of the Federation Diplomatic Corps joins Ken and Bri to review the penultimate episode of Picard 's first season. We finally arrive on the synth homeworld, where we find Data's look-alike, Lore's spiritual successor, a deteriorating admiral, and a blank android ready to host one lucky recipient. We have suspicions about who's really who — and who must die!

The origin of the Zhat Vash is revealed, Seven of Nine takes on a new role, and Raffi tries to put Rios back together again as all the plots start to weave together. So many feels! Jean-Luc is reunited with some of his old crew, providing a temporary safe haven as he and Soji plot their next move. This family has seen its share of pain, but they're stronger together, bringing Bri and Ken to tears — we didn't want this episode to end. ❤️

Picard, Soji, and Hugh finally cross paths in what Ken and Bri consider the best episode of the season so far. But the closer we get to the synth homeworld, the more questions and more theories we have! We sit down in person to connect the dots from TNG episodes "Descent", "I, Borg", and even "Encounter at Farpoint", marveling that some Picard fans can enjoy the series without having the background of these characters and contexts.

Seven of Nine returns in an episode that should've opened with a content warning. Ken and Bri debate Seven's motivations, what's happened to her since Voyager returned to the Alpha Quadrant, and whether we've seen the last of this character. Meanwhile, two different characters bid adieu to their sons this episode, and Agnes is all too briefly reunited with her lover. We have a theory about why she does what she does — a Transporter Lock original!

The second episode of Picard introduces new characters and intrigue, rapidly advancing the plot while still not putting Jean-Luc on a starship. Ken and guest co-host Amanda are okay with this as we pull apart the threads of the Romulan's Tal Shiar and Zhat Vash, our empathy (or lack thereof) for synthetic lifeforms, the integration of non-canon characters, and colorful metaphors in Trek .

Patrick Stewart returns as Jean-Luc Picard in "Remembrance", the pilot episode of Star Trek: Picard . Bri and Ken react to the return of this iconic character, how he's changed over the last twenty years, and his ability to be the action star of this new series. We also puzzle over the connection between synthetics, Borg, and Romulan, and we spot the many tie-ins to the universe of The Next Generation as well as the 2009 movie.

For the first time in 45 years, Star Trek ventures into the frontier of animation! "Ephraim and Dot" is a comedic documentary about a tardigrade's reproductive cycle, and "The Girl Who Made the Stars" is a tale of conquering one's fear of the unknown. When a decorated but dishonored Starfleet captain puts Cadet Thira Sidhu in an impossible situation, she must choose a side with lives on the line. To be or not to be? That is the question Sabriel and Ken pose to our guest, Dori Robinson , Boston theatre director and co-host of Shakespearean podcast The Mousetrap . Was Cadet Sidhu's test calculating or cruel? How would we have responded in that same situation? Is any internship worth psychological torture? And what does it say about Number One?...

What would Star Trek look like if it were a comedy series? We don't need to wait for the debut of Lower Decks , as the Short Treks episode "The Trouble with Edward" features both tribbles and the comedic talents of H. Jon Benjamin ( Archer ) and Rosa Salazar ( Alita: Battle Angel ). Ken and Bri ponder the consequences of this tale on Star Trek canon, from tribbles' rate of breeding to the VCR-style post-credits commercial for breakfast cereal.

The second season finale of Discovery has finally landed, offering plenty of space battles and fisticuffs that didn't live up to their potential. The episode also tied up plenty of loose threads, but it left few hanging for us to get an idea of what to expect in the next season. But we loved the dialogue and the characters, as always, with questions raised and answered in director Olatunde Osunsanmi's behind-the-scenes diary , an interview with season three co-showrunner Michelle Paradise , and...

The second season's penultimate episode is a long, drawn-out affair with many ponderous, redundant speeches and reflections — making it one of Ken's favorite of the season! Bri was less receptive, perhaps due to time travel giving her a headache. We swoon over the Enterprise and reflect on the characters' inner monologues and heartfelt goodbyes while looking forward to a trip to the future.

Dr. Burnham is alive! The possibility of having back a lost parent struck Ken, making this a difficult episode for not just Michael. But can Georgiou stand the competition for Michael's affection? Meanwhile, the possibility of CONTROL being precursor to the Borg seems plausible but unlikely. Before finally learning the identity of the Red Angel, we have some difficult scenes to get through. Burnham's decision reminds Ken of his own life-and-death ordeal, and the temporal mechanics give both of us a headache. On the bright side, Airiam's funeral gives us hope that Doug Jones' singing will be on the Discovery Season 2 soundtrack; we love Georgiou encouraging us to escape binary thinking; and we totally caught this tie-in to Voyager . Does anyone else need a hug? Michael and Spock fight over chess, and though he doesn't finish his stratagem, the argument hit close to home with Ken but missed the mark with only-child Bri. The minefield brought back memories of Star Trek Beyond and how susceptible starships are to physical warfare. And Airiam, whom we came to know too late in the season, nonetheless bid a desperate farewell that left us breathless. We were nonetheless left with a general sense of confusion: has nobody in...
